UKTV History – Yesterday

Red Bee Media sought out Munky to help create the new branding idents for digital channel Yesterday (previously UKTV History).

The new idents and 15 on screen presentations, created by Red Bee Media, cover a variety of historical periods including Ancient Rome, World War II, 1980s, Victorian Renaissance, Punk and Post-modern.

Entitled ‘Debutants’, ‘Football’, ‘Hoodies’, ‘Suffragettes’, ‘War’ and ‘Wright Brothers’, the idents are a fusion of footage and music from two contrasting eras that aim to encourage the audience to view the past with fresh eyes.

The Sufferagettes ident uses archive black and white film of the late 19th and early 20th century movement showing members marching in protest, which runs over a 1970′s anarchy-fuelled punk track.

Football shows a sea of die-hard football fans in unified glory decked with Saint George flags and painted faces at a football game that looks and sounds like a battle.

The Debutantes ident features a high society aristocratic party in full swing, complete with ball gowns and tuxedos juxtaposed against electronic 80′s dance music.

Hoodies follows a stereotypical group of teenage boys congregating in a shadowy urban environment, which is accompanied by a monastic chant.

War features a film sequence of a military control room in the midst of planning tactics using Morse code, which is set against the distinctive sounds of today’s digital age.

The Wright Bros ident shows footage of the first successful aeroplane flight as the two brothers test their flying machine. This is contrasted against the sounds of space age technology.

Andy Bryant, director, creative at Red Bee Media, said: “Our creative challenge was to capture the essence of history in 30 second moments and to present historical scenes in a surprising and poignant way that would resonate with the audience.”
